Underground Schools In Afghanistan

Defying the Taliban restrictions on women and girl’s education

The Taliban’s seizure of power in 2021 dealt a severe blow to Afghan women, who had spent the last two decades fighting for their rights and roles in society.

We’re working with local partners in the country to fund secret underground schools to counter this oppression and help girls get the vital education they need.

Between 2021 and December 2023, 8,007 students were enrolled in two covert schools supported by Ideas Beyond Borders, with 4,615 enrolled just this year. More than 53 teachers imparted education in 38 secret locations, covering 20 subjects. Led by local educators, the Underground Schools initiative offers students access to facilities, educational resources, and a secure environment to pursue their high school education.
