In the time of COVID-19
As the pandemic swept through, it exposed the inadequacy of MENA’s preparedness, while state actors took advantage of the chaos to disseminate extremist misinformation, leading to tragic loss of life.
In the face of this challenge, we saw the essence of the Enlightenment in promoting reason and facts. We also acknowledged the imperative to use our expertise and networks to fulfill a humanitarian duty.
Countering Covid-19 Disinformation
We launched the Stop the Spread digital public health education campaign to counter authoritarian disinformation that was costing lives. We produced videos, articles and infographics debunking unscientific myths and propaganda, spreading Covid-19 factual information, and providing wellness resources for the general population to protect themselves. Our content reached over 30 million views in four months.


Humanitarian Aid in Iraq
Throughout the pandemic, hospitals and frontline workers in Iraq faced challenges accessing masks, while many individuals across the nation grappled with food insecurity. Shortly after the pandemic’s onset, we swiftly distributed over 144,000 medical-grade masks and provided 756,000 meals to communities in war-torn areas, from Mosul in the north to Baghdad, Anbar Province in the west, and Wasit in the south.
Stopping the Spread by Ideas Beyond Borders
This slim volume features the story of how a small, young nonprofit sought to meet the moment. In early March 2020, our New York and Middle East teams were facing the challenges brought on by the pandemic. Amidst the chaos, a pressing question arose: How was an organization committed to promoting ideas and self-education as a means of igniting a new Middle East Enlightenment even relevant in the midst of such a crisis?
